Received 12 July 1995

The experimental set-ups and methods of growing monocrystals of BISCO (2212) are described and in particular the flux method, two self-flux methods and the method of sealed cavity. All these methods, except the last one, proved fairly successful. However, a monocrystal of the pure 2212 phase has not yet been obtained. In good monocrystals, the percentage of the parasitic 2223 phase is very small and, for most of the transport measurements, undetectable. The experience gathered indicates the conditions under which the pure 2212 phase could be synthesized.
