Instructions for Authors

General instructions

Fizika A is a journal publishing the results of original experimental and theoretical research work in classical physics (including optics, classical statistical physics and nonlinear phenomena), atomic and molecular physics, condensed matter physics and plasma physics.

Fizika B (Zagreb) is a journal publishing the results of original experimental and theoretical research work in general physics (including mathematical physics and quantum theory), nuclear physics, astrophysics, particles and fields and teaching and history of physics.

The basic requirement for the acceptance of a manuscript for publication is that it presents new and original results of research work in physics and/or its applications, and that it is of a broader interest.

Five types of contributions are published in Fizika A and Fizika B: 1) regular articles (usually 8 to 16 typeset pages, with titled sections), 2) letters (up to 8 typeset pages, no sections) 3) review articles (the requirement is that also some new and original results are presented; up to 30 pages), 4) comments (no abstract, up to 1 typeset page, with the opening paragraph clearly indication the article referred to) and 5) replies to the comments.

When submitting a paper, the authors should include a covering letter, signed by one of the authors, clearly requesting publication of the manuscript (defined by the names of author(s) and the title) in Fizika A or Fizika B.

When preparing a contribution, authors are strongly advised to consult recent issues of the journals. The important point is that all elements of the manuscript are included, while the technical style of the typesetting need not be followed. Contributions written in English, French, German or Russian are accepted. An English translation of the title and the abstract is required if the original is in a different language.

Each contribution should begin with an informative and concise title. In the byline, the names should be written: first the personal name(s) (initials, but we prefer at least one full personal name), followed by the family name of each author. In case an author uses a different order of writing his name, the family name should be marked in some way. The byline should end with full address(es) of affiliation(s) of each author (or his private address). In case of multiple affiliations (addresses), they should be marked by superscript numerals and each name should carry the appropriate numeral(s).

The footnotes should be numbered in Arabic superscripts and placed at the bottom of the page in which they appear in the manuscript.

Each contribution should have an abstract which is a short summary of the presented work. The abstract must be self-contained (i.e., without footnotes or reference to other parts of the manuscript) and should include keywords and PACS number(s). The abstract should not exceed 800 characters including spaces.

The main part of the contribution should be clearly written, with a logical presentation and convincing arguments. It should begin with an introduction and end with a conclusion. Equations should be written carefully and clearly and numbered sequentially on the right-hand side. Special care should be paid to all symbols that can be misread, confused or are ambiguous (e.g. to distinguish between subscripts and superscripts). The mathematical expressions and symbols must be well explained and clearly described and the important results should be discussed to sufficient detail. Avoid excessively large mathematical expressions by defining parts using additional symbols. The international system of units (SI) should be used whenever possible, particularly in quoting the final results and in table and figure inscriptions.

The figures and (separately) the tables should be numbered sequentially using Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text, and each of them should have a descriptive caption. The figures should preferably be computer-set, but avoid scanning (raster formats) because of their large files and relatively poor quality. Use vectorial-type formats (see below). Figures should be fully lettered. Reduction to about 1/3 of the original size is usually used. The lettering in the figures must be large enough to make the final size at least 1.5 mm high. Black and white photographs on glossy paper with high contrast are accepted. Single figures (one in a line) should preferably have a larger width than height, but for pairs of figures, that is not required.

References should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numbers in square brackets. In the text, the abbreviation et al. should be used for articles written by three or more authors, but not for articles written by two authors, when names of both authors should be written. All references should be listed on a separate sheet and should include the names of all authors (except for very large collaborations of more than about 10 authors). The references should be written using the following style: 5) S. Smith and J. K. Jones, Phys. Rev. 295 (1972) 422.

Authors are encouraged to include a list of scientists who they believe are especially suited to report on their manuscript. The editors are not obliged to select the referees from that list. If an author believes that a conflict is possible, he may send a list (a limited number) of names with the request that they be excluded as referees. The editors usually honour such requests.

Authors may wish that their identity is not revealed to the referees. If such a request is made, also a copy of the manuscript without the names of authors, addresses and other data that may reveal the origin of the work is requested.

Submission of manuscripts on paper (hard copies)

The "General instructions" (above) should be followed. The manuscripts should be submitted in duplicate, typed on good quality white paper on one side only, with double spacing and wide margins, with original drawings of figures and one further copy of the title and abstract in English if the original is in a different language.

Equations should be written carefully and numbered sequentially on the right-hand side. Special care should be paid to all symbols that can be misread, confused or are ambiguous (e.g. to distinguish between subscripts and superscripts). Please add a note in the margin to avoid such ambiguities or to explain special symbols (only the first time a symbol appears).

The figures should preferably be produced by a laser printer on good-quality white paper or drawn in Indian ink on white or tracing paper. All figures should be marked with the name of the first author and the number of the figure on the back side. The figure captions should be typed on a separate sheet of paper.

To speed up the communication, authors are encouraged to provide e-mail address, FAX and telephone numbers. Unless requested otherwise, the e-mail address and/or FAX number will be published with the author's address.

For refereeing purposes only, manuscripts including figures may also be sent by FAX. After the manuscript has been accepted for publication, the author(s) will be advised to send two original copies, including figures, or the computer files, to the Editor for further processing.

Submission of manuscripts as computer files (preferable)

The "General instructions" (above) should be followed. When preparing a manuscript, authors are strongly advised to consult recent issues of Fizika.

To speed up the publication, the authors are encouraged to send a source file of the text of their manuscript in standard LATEX (style "article'') or in plain TEX without any author-defined styles and/or macros. The files written in WORD are also accepted, but they require complete retyping of all mathematical type (Greek letters, subscripts and superscripts, arrows, etc.). If the manuscript contains much mathematical type, it is a repetition of considerable work that was already done in WORD.

Special attention should be given to the preparation of the graphics. The graphs, diagrams, schemes and other drawings should be produced by an application (graphics routine) which uses VECTOR format. Scanned material is in RASTER format, which is acceptable only for photographs and other pictures where it can not be avoided. The RASTER graphics is of a much poorer quality and produces much larger files than the VECTOR graphics. Also, one should use "black/white" rather than "grayscale" graphics whenever the output is not grayscale.

The RASTER graphics formats should be sent ONLY if author(s) is (are) unable to comply with the above requirements. Those are .GIF, .BMP, .TIFF, and the least desirable .JPEG.

The graphics files should preferably be sent in Encapsulated PostScript (.EPS) format. Many applications have this option included under Save As menu. In other applications, there is a possibility to make .EPS file with Print option, but a PostScript installation is required with Print To File option checked. The printer itself need not be installed. Also, during the printer installation, .EPS option should be chosen (the default is .PS). If unable to produce the .EPS file, .PS should be good in most cases.

Along with the .EPS files, the original files should also be sent. They usually have extensions like .ORG, .SP, .OPJ, .PDS, .PDF, etc.

The figures should preferably be prepared in "landscape" orientation. The description of the axes in the diagrams should be lengthwise along the axes. Units should be enclosed in brackets, and should comply with the SI system.

The sending of computer files can be done by electronic mail (to ilakovac@phy.hr) or on a floppy disc (MS-DOS formatted) or CD-ROM.
