The light complex introduced by A. Einstein in his first relativity paper has the
characteristics of a provisional concept and was soon abandoned. Nevertheless, it was
crucial for Einstein's derivation of the equivalence of mass and energy. The discussion of
various forms of the light complex strictly within Maxwell's electrodynamics leads to
interesting insight.
