A study of the interpretation of hyperdeformed nuclei as dinuclear quasimolecular cluster configurations is presented. Under the assumption that hyperdeformed states are quasimolecular resonance states, it is suggested to excite them directly in heavy-ion collisions. Signatures of hyperdeformed states in such reactions could be g-transitions between these states and their decay into the nuclei forming the hyperdeformed nucleus.
