The unidirectional motion of a particle in a static homogeneous gravitational field is
studied together with the motion of the source in the proper frame of the particle. Then
the nongravitational counterpart, e.g. a charged particle in a static homogeneous electric
field, is considered. The comparison of both types of results establishes a formal
symmetry which may be useful in the transition from special to general relativity.
